How to survive in windy conditions

by Harold Carey Jr

Here are some tips on how to survive in windy conditions:

Before strong winds:

  • Stay informed: Check the weather forecast for wind advisories or warnings. This will give you an idea of the wind speeds to expect and whether you need to take precautions.
  • Secure outdoor items: Bring in or tie down outdoor furniture, grills, trash cans, and anything else that could become airborne in strong winds.
  • Prepare your home: Close and board up windows if necessary. Check for loose shingles or other damage to your roof that could be worsened by high winds.
  • Assemble an emergency kit: This should include food, water, a battery-powered radio, flashlights, extra batteries, and a first-aid kit.

If you’re caught outside in high winds:

  • Find shelter: If possible, get indoors to a sturdy building. Avoid windows and take cover in a basement or interior room.
  • If you can’t get indoors: Take shelter next to a sturdy building or under a solid structure, like a car bridge (but not under an overpass).
  • Stay away from dangerous areas: Avoid trees, power lines, signs, and other objects that could blow over or become flying debris.
  • Protect yourself from debris: If you’re caught in open areas and can’t find shelter, lie down in a ditch or other low-lying area. Cover your head and neck with your arms.

If you’re driving:

  • Slow down and be extra cautious: Strong winds can make it difficult to control your vehicle.
  • Watch out for flying debris: Be aware of objects blowing across the road and be prepared to brake suddenly.
  • Give extra space to other vehicles: Strong gusts can push cars around, so maintain a safe distance from others on the road.
  • Pull over if necessary: If the winds are severe enough to make driving dangerous, pull over to the side of the road and wait for the conditions to improve. Don’t park under trees or power lines.

By following these tips, you can help stay safe during windy conditions.
