Don’t Worry About Food

by Harold Carey Jr

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) teaches that food is the lowest priority in a survival situation. This is because you can survive for days without food, but only hours without water. The BSA’s Seven Priorities for Survival are:

  1. S.T.O.P. – Stop, Think, Observe, Plan.
  2. Provide First Aid.
  3. Seek Shelter.
  4. Build a Fire.
  5. Signal for Help.
  6. Drink Water.
  7. Don’t Worry About Food.

The idea is that if you focus on staying hydrated and finding shelter, you will be more likely to survive until you can get help. Food is important, but it is not as essential as water and shelter.

There are a few reasons why the BSA teaches that you should not worry about food in a survival situation. First, food is not as essential for survival as water. You can survive for days without food, but only hours without water. Second, it can be difficult to find food in a survival situation. If you are not familiar with the area, you may not know what plants are edible or where to find animals to hunt. Third, even if you do find food, it may not be safe to eat. Some plants can be poisonous, and animals may carry diseases.

Of course, if you have food with you, you should eat it. But if you do not have food, do not worry about it. Focus on staying hydrated and finding shelter, and you will be more likely to survive until you can get help.

Here are some additional tips for surviving without food in a wilderness setting:

  • Eat high-energy foods. If you do have food, eat foods that are high in calories and nutrients. This will give you the energy you need to stay alive.
  • Drink plenty of water. As mentioned earlier, water is essential for survival. Make sure you drink plenty of water, even if you are not thirsty.
  • Rest. If you are tired, you will not be able to think clearly or make good decisions. Take breaks when you need them, and get as much sleep as you can.
  • Stay positive. It is important to stay positive in a survival situation. If you give up hope, you are less likely to survive.

By following these tips, you can increase your chances of surviving without food in a wilderness setting.
