Cold weather can be life-threatening. If you can’t avoid being outside, remember to follow these 3 steps and make sure to always tell someone where you’re going
With the chilly weather, staying safe in the cold is important. Here are some tips to keep you warm and healthy:
Before heading out:
- Check the forecast: Pay attention to wind chill temperatures, which can be much colder than the actual air temperature. Dress accordingly and avoid going out if the wind chill is dangerously low.
- Dress in layers: Wear several loose-fitting layers of clothing, starting with a light base layer like a thermal shirt, followed by an insulating layer like a wool sweater, and topped with a windproof and waterproof outer layer like a jacket. Don’t forget to cover your head, ears, and neck with a hat and scarf.
- Protect your extremities: Wear warm, waterproof gloves or mittens on your hands and insulated boots on your feet. Choose footwear with good traction to avoid slipping on ice and snow.
While outdoors:
- Limit your time in extreme cold: Avoid prolonged exposure to cold temperatures, especially if you have any underlying health conditions. Take breaks indoors or in a warm vehicle to warm up.
- Stay dry: Getting wet can significantly increase heat loss, so wear waterproof clothing and footwear and avoid sweating.
- Be aware of the signs of hypothermia: These include shivering, slurred speech, confusion, drowsiness, and loss of coordination. If you suspect someone has hypothermia, seek immediate medical attention.
- Watch for frostbite: The most common areas affected are the fingers, toes, nose, ears, and cheeks. Signs of frostbite include numbness, tingling, and pale or waxy skin. If you suspect frostbite, seek medical attention immediately.
At home:
- Keep your home warm: Make sure your thermostat is set to a comfortable temperature, ideally above 55°F. Seal any drafts around windows and doors to prevent heat loss.
- Check your pipes: Insulate exposed pipes to prevent them from freezing and bursting. Let a trickle of water run from faucets in cold areas to keep the water moving.
- Have a winter emergency kit: This should include items like blankets, food, water, a first-aid kit, a flashlight, and a battery-powered radio.
Additional tips:
- Eat a healthy diet: Food provides your body with the energy it needs to stay warm. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Check on vulnerable neighbors: Older adults and young children are especially vulnerable to cold weather. Check on them regularly to make sure they are staying warm and safe.
